There were a lot of characters in this film, so it was kind of hard to go back and forth.

In an attempt to differentiate the new property from the horror films of other studios, the producers of the film made the decision to produce their creep-fest in the relatively new two-color Technicolor system and persuaded Natalie Kalmus, the color director at Technicolor, to work with them on developing a color scheme that would enhance the mysterious atmosphere they wished to create for the film. The entire look of the film is unforgettably odd. Doctor X is not the most frightening or memorable horror film to come out of the 1930s, but it is inventive in its early and idiosyncratic use of color and in its remarkable set design. A sequel was made a few years later starring a very uncomfortable-looking Humphrey Bogart, but it is now best forgotten.

Doctor X (1932) -- [4.5] -- There's a house full of mad scientists and one of them is a cannibal. For such a lively concept, the movie is pretty subdued until the final five minutes. I hate Lee Tracy as the reporter. His annoying brand of humor contaminates the whole film. Seeing him accidentally back into skeleton after skeleton made me wish the cannibal scientist would just eat him already. Oh, and he has a hand buzzer gag that he uses. Over. And over. And over again. It's like Tracy and his character are from an entirely different movie. "Doctor X" is sometimes known as the first color horror film, but it's just a two-strip Technicolor process, not full-blown color. The two-strip process is muddy-looking, but gives an interesting ambience to the movie.

This movie actually sent chills down my spine, and not many 30s horror films can do that. I was really amazed at this movie, it had good actors like Fay Wray and Lionel Atwill, it was in colour (I want to find out if it was originally in color or if it was colorized later), and it's got one of the scariest monsters of the 30s. I wasn't expecting much from a movie called doctor X, but this film delivers. I highly recommend checking this movie out if you love old horror pictures.

Mystery-horror with tongue-in-cheek comedy elements has the merit of being the first colour horror film and the first modern set talking horror film. It tells of the investigation by a journalist of the moonlight murders whereby victims are killed and cannbalised by the full moon. Lionel Atwill, in one of his first major screen roles dominates.
