Doctor Faustus (1967)

Faustus is a scholar at the University of Wittenberg when he earns his doctorate degree. His insatiable appetite for knowledge and power leads him to employ necromancy to conjure Mephistopheles out of hell. He bargains away his soul to Lucifer in exchange for living 24 years during which Mephistopheles will be his slave. Faustus signs the pact in his own blood and Mephistopheles reveals the works of the devil to Faustus.

Burton's rendition is pretty good...although nothing beats the original

I'm sure anyone familiar with the play will be intrigued, but I felt like I should have had a couple beers beforehand to enjoy this a little more.

I've always thought of Elizabeth Taylor as the Helen of Troy of the twentieth century. However, though she plays Helen of Troy, neither she nor Richard Burton could get me to sit through this. I love the actors and I love Doctor Faustus, but this was a cinematic turd.

Trippy as hell, Burton is wonderfully over-the-top, but it watches more like a play than a movie and the score becomes repetitive and irritating. I'd like to see an updated adaptation as I love the concept and its many versions (I'd nick and change parts of this particular story).
