Divertimento (2000)

A rivalry between two actors proves to have dangerous consequences in this drama from Spain. Daniel (Federico Luppi) is the star of a popular television series who is interested in more prestigious work. and longs to appear on the legitimate stage. Daniel is lobbying for the leading role in Divertimento, a well-known play that made a star of leading man Bernardo Gabler (Francisco Rabal). When Daniel pays a visit to the theater where the play is being staged, he discovers to his surprise that Bernardo is waiting for him. Bernardo is not at all eager to turn over his signature role to another actor and insists on putting Daniel through a punishing audition, which turns out to be the least of Daniel's problems when Bernardo forces him to help hide a corpse, implicating him in a murder Bernardo claims to have committed.

A story about the creation of art, albeit a long story but a good one.

Torture. I love this movie. We're given the impotence of an artist as the spine of the film. This is accentuated by the beauty of his muse. He just can't find his art despite his valliant efforts, and we share his frustration as he tries. A lot going on with the passing of muses, the torture of Beart's posing endlessly, the developing relationship between the artist and his model. In the end, he's won over by her and finds the link back to his creativity, but we, the audience, are tortured further by watching the artist brick his masterpiece into the wall of his studio- we never see the final painting. Love Emmanuelle Beart and the refreshing sensibilities of the french director's story telling.

A wondrous movie about the creation of art, of the relationship between artist and subject, the impact the pursuit of art has on those not in the midst of its creation, etc. It's close to four hours along, but the scenes where the art is actually being drawn have a real tension and reality to them. This is no way a film for everyone (did I mention it was four hours about art?), but it's simply amazing for those ready to tackle it.

Excellent arthouse movie directed by the veteran Jacques Rivette. Riveting perfomance perfomance by Emmanuelle Beart, who spends nearly half of the time courageously nude in front of the cameras by being the subject of the upcoming painting by Michel Piccoli
