Divertimento (2000)

A rivalry between two actors proves to have dangerous consequences in this drama from Spain. Daniel (Federico Luppi) is the star of a popular television series who is interested in more prestigious work. and longs to appear on the legitimate stage. Daniel is lobbying for the leading role in Divertimento, a well-known play that made a star of leading man Bernardo Gabler (Francisco Rabal). When Daniel pays a visit to the theater where the play is being staged, he discovers to his surprise that Bernardo is waiting for him. Bernardo is not at all eager to turn over his signature role to another actor and insists on putting Daniel through a punishing audition, which turns out to be the least of Daniel's problems when Bernardo forces him to help hide a corpse, implicating him in a murder Bernardo claims to have committed.

Some movies are worlds that we can sink into, and La Belle Noiseuse is one of them.

An amazing film which gives us an insiders look at an artist and his canvas. There is no true explanation of this film which would do it any service, accept to say that it is truly a wonderful experience to be with these people for four of the quickest hours you have ever spent with a film.

La Belle Noiseuse (1991) The Beautiful Troublemaker The film won the Grand Prix at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival. Warning this film is 4 hours and is about art and artists. lots of dialogue and no action. classic french movie. A famous but reclusive painter, Frenhofer (Piccoli) lives quietly with his wife and former model (Birkin) in a large château in rural Languedoc-Roussillon. When a young artist visits him with his girlfriend Marianne (Béart), Frenhofer is inspired to commence work once more on a painting he long ago abandoned - La Belle Noiseuse - using Marianne as his model. The film painstakingly explores Frenhofer's creative rebirth, using lengthy real-time takes of the artist's hand (provided by Bernard Dufour) working on the canvas.. five stars magnificent but not recommended for most viewers.

Jacques Rivette's four-hour long LA BELLE NOISEUSE has been compared (rather rightfully so) to watching paint dry. Well, I guess I enjoy watching paint dry! Much of the film consists of long, stationary shots of the artist at work. The film tells the story of an aging artist who hasn't worked for ten years. When young Marianne (the always beautiful Emmanuelle Beart) comes to model for him, though, the creative juices being flowing, and he sets upon completing his should-be masterpiece, "La belle noiseuse." The two-hour version, DIVERTIMENTO was comprised of alternate takes, and it feels more like a typical foreign flick. In fact, DIVERTIMENTO feels a lot longer than its more spaciously paced counterpart. LA BELLE NOISEUSE is a rare, exceptional masterpiece of a motion picture.
