Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988)

Siblings Maisie and Tony, along with their mother, gather for their sister Eileen's wedding. It is a joyous occasion, but through flashbacks, it becomes clear that the family was not always happy. Their father was physically abusive to his wife and left the children emotionally traumatized. As a result, the children have grown into unhappy adults, looking for love they didn't receive when they were young.

A sad and very reminiscent film, but the over stylisation distanced me from the characters somewhat.

Few British film-makers have dared to attempt such a thoroughly poetic treatment of their native land, and Terence Davies is the only one to have succeeded so spectacularly.

Brillant...poetic film making at its best. Tears will be shed!

Maybe not the best Saturday night flick... but if you set aside the need to be entertained you can find so much merit and so much feeling in this film. The sense of memory and how it comes back to us in its sharp and/or dreamlike ways is beautifully camptured in painterly expression. The subject of escapism is discussed; and the film manages to show the security and devilishness in escape. Enjoyable, but it makes you work for it.

This isn't a film based on nostalgia, though; its very special qualities stem from the beautiful simplicity of direction, writing and playing, and the accuracy of the incidents depicted.
