The rich, well-acted drama doesn't gain much from an awkward shift into violent gangster-related action. Still, Audiard stages the urban warfare with his usual muscular flair, and this is a film that keeps hold of your attention.

What starts out as an intriguing look at the modern-day immigrant experience gradually deteriorates into a meandering muddle that tries to redeem itself with a 21st Century rendition of "Taxi Driver." Despite solid performances and beautiful cinematography, this film, like much of Jacques Audiard's work, never quite seems to find its footing, which is unfortunate, considering the potential with which it began.

Less polished and lighter-budgeted than Jacques Audiard last few pictures, it's easy to see Dheepen as a regression for the French director, but the stripped-down style works well for the the depiction of urban decay. The movie is quite harrowing in showing the viewers the hardships of contemporary immigrants in Europe, with images of poverty that are reminiscent of The Wire. It stays highly realistic for most of its run, yet Audiard intersperses dream-esque sequences throughout that still somehow work with the movie's flow, although it ends with an elongated scene that almost feels like it belongs in a Die-Hard movie. It's an unusual film that may yield more rewards on subsequent viewings, but just about anyone will be impressed by it even if they just see it once, even if they're left scratching their heads.
