A quiet and poetic character study. Kurosawa directs this Russian film with beauty, compassion, and sensitivity. A beautiful story full of wisdom and a heart that sings to the soul. "Dersu Uzala" is an impressive, emotional journey through the harsh elements and warm friendships. Kurosawa proves himself a master filmmaker once again with refreshing maturity that he would bring to all of his projects following this one. "Dersu Uzala" was the beginning of a new stage in Kurosawa's filmmaking. An excellent precursor to films like "Ran," "Rhapsody in August," and "Madadayo."

A story about friendship, human nature, man's relationship with nature and with other men, civilization... Kurasawa is a master filmmaker!

This is old, pessimistic Kurosawa at his best. Eternal optimists should take small doses of irony for several weeks before watching this film.

A very fine film made in the wilderness. Beautiful story of friendship and nature. The character Yoda from Star Wars is probablee adaptation from Dersu.

What can I say about this movie. I love kurosawa and it is one of my favourite of the 25 or so films ive seen by him. Not only does it perfectly capture a humanistic element, but it also captures a wonderful aesthetic. In this respect,to me, it reaches a level that only Ikiru and Red Beard in his filmography achieve.
