Dead Men Walk (1943)

When a small town doctor buries his twin brother, a practitioner of the black arts, he believes him dead; but subsequent events force him to realize that his brother has, in fact, returned from the dead as a vampire and is seeking revenge on the doctor, who had killed him in self-defense.

Despite being pretty much a weaker version of Dracula (complete with Dwight Frye playing a subservient madman that shouts "master" --but hey, he's good at it), the film is not a complete rip-off due to its "evil twin" angle, which makes this film unique in the vampire movie genre. Zucco makes the film, giving a solid, and appropriately creepy, performance. He does not, however, have the appeal of Lugosi, as much as the film may try to emulate that.

Has a few bright spots, such as a campy Zucco rising from the dead to chant a black arts mantra.

An enjoyable vampire flick. It was probably good for its time but has not held up well over the long haul. However, would be a recommendation to the lover of the fang features.

It all fizzles under lackluster direction, a story that drags, and a conflict that ultimately just isn't that interesting, let alone frightening.
