Dark Dungeons (2014)

College freshmen Debbie and Marcie are excited to start their new lives at a Pacific Northwest university but after being invited to a Zeta Omega Epsilon party the two suddenly find themselves in the strange and occult world of Role Playing Games. The duo are soon hooked on the highly addictive experience that is RPGing and the game quickly becomes a habit that consumes their lives. After Debbie's intense pagan training through the RPGs lead her to accept an invitation to join a witches' coven, her grades begin to plummet and she is in danger of flunking out of college. She calls on darker and deeper magical forces to use a "mind bondage" spell on her professor. Meanwhile, Marcie foolishly reads from the Necronomicon and summons Cthulhu.

An adaptation true to the source material. Although by definition not a parody, gamers will definitely find these 40 minutes most entertaining.

This movie is exactly what it promises: a faithful interpretation of Jack Chick's INSANE tract against pen and paper RPGs. I backed this on kickstarter and patiently waited, and when it came I was shocked at just how well it was done. It definitely deserves a second, third, fourth, and more watchings, as every time I pick up another subtlety I missed the first several times through. Like Maddox gave to Fury Road, if I could I would rate this movie at 100/5 stars. This was a triumph.

Dark Dungeons is a famous piece of anti-gaming propaganda that was re-purposed and adapted by an independent studio run by gamers into a hilariously brilliant work. The cast is amazing: it's difficult to imagine a better representation of the characters from the tract. They deliver Chick's lines while walking a thin line between sincerity and campy humor, and the result is spectacular. JR Ralls's script follows the plot and spirit of the source material in a similar fashion. One gets the impression that, in addition to wringing every ounce of unintentional humor out of Chick's story, he also kind of loves it. The movie feels like a celebration of the tract that's at once ironic and sincere at the same time. It's absolutely the right approach for this project, and the final result is one of the most fun things I've seen in a long time. Until the ending shot, which is - rightly so - a little haunting.

SUPER goddamn preachy, and the characters are all unlikeable. The story is boring, and the CGI sucks. But that was done on purpose. This was, after all, a story based on a chict track. But, so bad its good is a trait that wears off after a short time, so Im just gonna keep this at one star, as it doesnt take itself too seriuosly.
