Daphne (2017)

Daphne is a young woman negotiating the tricky business of modern life. Caught in the daily rush of her restaurant job and a nightlife kaleidoscope of new faces, she is witty, funny, the life of the party. Too busy to realise that deep down she is not happy. Daphne is a wisecracking wit who may just resemble women you actually know. Imagine that.

Atmospheric and startlingly well performed by the cast, this is a compelling character study. Daphne may find people largely annoying, but there's inspiration in her determination to find her way.

If you're a fan of Bridesmaids, Obvious Child and/or TV shows such as Girls and Fleabag, you'll feel a tingle of rapture, roughly 10 minutes into the proceedings. That feeling won't go away.

On paper, this is not what he type of film I should like. There's no really story or conflict or resolution or anything you might expect from a mainstream film. But it was just so well written and acted and I found the lead character so interesting and charming. Really full of life. Lovely film.

Beecham is excellent as Daphne, portraying a character who has grown up with a certain level of entitlement but is now beginning to see how she is going nowhere and looking down through the gaps in the rope bridge to glimpse the emptiness below.
