The Mill and the Cross (2011)

What would it be like to step inside a great work of art, have it come alive around you, and even observe the artist as he sketches the very reality you are experiencing? From Lech Majewski, one of Poland's most acclaimed filmmakers, The Mill and the Cross is a cinematic re-staging of Pieter Bruegel's masterpiece "Procession to Calvary," presented alongside the story of its creation.

Another Febiofest screening, Polish director Lech Majewski gave a brief introduction of the film before the screening and stressed on how strenuously the film had been produced, after a four-year span (mostly for post-production and animation) and ultimately mentioned that the pictorial sky in the film was specifically shot in New Zealand.

I don't think it's appropriate to expect a narrative from a snapshot - an allegorical snapshot at that - conveying the spiritual cosmology of peasants in the Renaissance. We might as well go to a movie based on "The Persistence of Memory" expecting to get a melodrama about a Spanish watchmaker on LSD. How banal would that be? For me it's enough that the film immerses us in Brueghel's world, from the mud to the heavens, and successfully communicates something of its way of life and thought across an almost interplanetary gulf of psychological distance, through the imagination of the artist.

It's easy to imagine that some folks will find the film rapturous, but it's equally clear that there are others whom it will drive crazy.

If you like the work of Bruegel, this movie may be interesting to you as it was for me. Visually captivating, creative in concept, but not a compelling story line. A bit like watching paint dry at many points. Nevertheless, it was an intriguing look at Bruegel's world. Some scenes disturbing and some incidental nudity.

Neither conventional costume drama nor abstract objet d'art, this visually ravishing, surprisingly beguiling gamble won't fit any standard arthouse niche. Still it could prove the Polish helmer's belated international breakthrough.
