Burt Lancaster's performance elevates another noir that makes no attempt to bring sound character logic to its overtly fatalistic plot.

Fucking fantastic. Yes, there are a few things wrong with them (studio imposed sirens, for one) and Lancaster is far from at his best, but this is ridiculously awesome. So well shot, it's insane. One of the best 40s noir I've seen.

It's about a man who thinks he holds his cards close to his chest when everyone around him knows (him) more/better than he knows (himself). Then when he sees how they control/determine his life, he reacts dangerously/disastrously. In the end, helpless/immobilized, he sees that it's every man (or woman) for him/herself. And we see that every man for himself means we all lose.

I'd like to see this movie again, it was interesting and exciting, I liked it, but I can't remember it very vividly.
