Jess Franco's 1970 adaptation of Bram Stoker's overly famous novel is rich in fidelity not only to the book, but to its already conceived adaptations. I'm referring specifically to Hammer Studios' The Horror of Dracula (This observation is not based solely on Christopher Lee being recast as the notorious Count). Franco, much like Terence Fisher, uses the camera to simply capture grandiose sets and moves it when the narrative deems necessary. However, the mise en scene in this film is significantly less stylized in comparison. A strong case for this film is Klaus Kinski's brilliant silent portrayal of Renfield; Dracula's bug-consuming minion.

Soledad Miranda is the only reason to see this and her part is not large. Kind of cheesy but in many respects it's very faithful to the novel, unlike other adaptations.

Not Franco's best in my own subjective opinion but I could be wrong, it could be his greatest. The narrative was all over the place and there were a lot of striking, funky shots, looking into camera and the roles just suited fine for each character, like Christopher Lee in particular. Very different from the other Dracula movies by Herzog, Murnau and Coppola, which is good since they all differ too.

I love vampires so I have to have old Dracula movies. They're a lot better than new movies!

I tell you something, this was a lot better than the crap horror films that are around today. Christopher Lee is brilliant in this, and while I still prefer the Gary Oldman version, I thought this one was pretty decent.
