Excellent examination of the Loeb/Leopold case. Dillman is chilling in his utter contempt for all emotion and Stockwell is fine as his puppet but alll pale next to Welles who offers a wily and wise performance. It's a shame he didn't act in more films like this and Touch of Evil that were worthy of his talent.

I had a bad feeling watching the opening scene (when the title appeared, and Strauss is laughing maniacally), but Dean Stockwel's simultaneously chilling and vulnerable portrayal of the young murderer is the treat of this film... other than every scene with Orson Welles, whose deceptively languid presence is magnetic (incl the only slightly overdone closing speech).

There are some outrageous moments in this classic crime drama - Orson Welles' character remarks that he's taken the case so as not "to deny the rich the same rights as the poor" (LOL, okay, sure...) - but overall Compulsion is a compelling look into the mind of the murderer, as well as the criminal justice system. Even the lead characters' homosexuality is portrayed with some pinache for 1959. Solid performances all around don't hurt either. Alongside In Cold Blood, this is one of the great thrill-killer movies ever made.

An entertaining movie to say the least. Similar to an episode of Law & Order, approx 2/3 the movie deals with 'catching the killers' and the other 1/3 deals with the courtroom drama. The acting is great, especially when considering how old the movie is.
