After the underappreciated STAKELAND Jim Mickle tries his hand at an 80's style film noir B picture. Detractors have remarked that this is merely a JOHN CARPENTER rip off which is true in part but misses the mark otherwise. Mickle sites JOHN CARPENTER and WALTER HILL as big influences and this film actually feels like an amalgamation of their styles. The synth score by Jeff Grace and slow burning atmosphere is pure JOHN CARPENTER (the font on the credits is the same as THE THING in fact) whereas the story feels more like a HILL film, a crime revenge drama built around turse men taking the law into their own hands. Despite the heavy homage of style and form Mickle still manages to deliver a film that somehow finally feels like neither. Perhaps though this film will mean far more to those who dig MICKLE's influences. I for one dug it hard.

Ok, I'll admit it, I only watched this because I wanted to watch "Dexter's" new movie. It is pretty good though.

This movie unfolded in some of the most awesome ways. Based on the trailer I thought I knew what I was getting into and by the end credits I was left in awe. See this.

Dark and moody East Texas noir with Michael C. Hall, Sam Shepard and Don Johnson. Hall plays a picture framer who accidentally shots an intruder in his home. Sam Shepard is the father, just released from jail, who comes seeking revenge. But things go seriously haywire when Hall realizes the man he shot is not the man the police told him he shot. Who is he? And when Hall rescues Shepard from the police, thing go from bad to worse. With just enough humor to leaven the tension, Joe R. lansdale's book has been brought to brilliant life by Jim Mickle. Highly recommended.
