Après 2 films d'horreur viscéraux (Stake land, We are what we are), Jim Mickle nous revient avec un western moderne plus terre-à-terre, mais non moins divertissant. Dès les premières minutes, on adore la trame sonore « synthwave/low-fi/80s » signée Jeff Grace, qui installe parfaitement l'ambiance énigmatique. Avec son humour noir et son protagoniste « average Joe dans une situation impossible », le film nous rappelle le style particulier des frères Cohen. Cold in july évite tout de même la pâle copie avec son scénario bien construit et assumé.
