Close Call (2004)

In Los Angeles, the young Jenny has a nice childhood with her Korean parents Joanne and David Kim. However, after the divorce of her parents, the judge gives her custody to her selfish mother that neglects Jenny while the disappointed David returns to Seoul. Six years later, Jenny is a troubled and reckless teenager expelled from the public school that has easy sex and uses drugs and booze, and her best friend is the orphan drug dealer Becky. The lawyer Elliot Krasner decides to call his former friend David to tell him about the self-destructive behavior of Jenny, and David returns to Los Angeles. He brings Jenny to live with him and support her, but the lack of emotional structure of Jenny imposes tough difficulties for their relationship.

This cautionary melodrama about a Korean-American teen girl's slide into depravity is too inconsequential and too earnest to belong in the So Bad It's Good category; rather, it's merely bad.

Jeez, RT critics, chill. It is hardly that bad. It's well acted, believable for the most part, I was never not interested. The movie has a point, and makes it clear, no beating around the bush. I found it very compelling. Sensitive direction. It worked for me, I felt for the characters, they moved me.

Granted, this film may seem slow and boring, but I honestly like it because of the fact that it shows the chaotic life of a teenager, and it also shows the adults trying to understand save her from going down the wrong path. It may be a bit cliched, but its definitely worth the time to watch and is enjoyable on a several levels.

Lee has heaped so many social ills on his heroine that it's difficult to buy any of it, especially when the story slips into silliness involving bad guys and missing drugs.
