One for the sentimentalists -- like me : ) Almost an unhappy ending, but they manage to pull it out. One of Cagney's "softer" roles, demonstrating his versatility. Sheridan is okay as the love almost lost, but her energy level struggles to keep up with Cagney's. A wonderful supporting job by many, and especially so for Elia Kazan as Googie Zucco. Perhaps best of all is the remarkable soundtrack that is powerfully reminiscent of Gershwin.

I agree with Lanning, it is a softer role for James Cagney, which was a nice refreshing change from all of his gangster films. Ann Sheridan, also did a lovely job. And I kind of see it as a continuation of Angels with Dirty Faces, except this time, he falls for her AND they wind up together at the end.

in "city for conquest", james cagney gives a hell of a performance. he brings a good amount of welcomed humor as well as the necessary emotions required for such a role. i found this film to be really entertaining, ang was on the edge of my seat during the big fight scene.
