Cinema Verite (2011)

In 1973, the Loud family became a television sensation of a new kind. It was long before a metal rock star showed his eccentric family on the small screen and decades before housewives had screaming matches with each other on camera in public. CINEMA VERITE tells the behind-the-scenes story of the groundbreaking documentary "An American Family," which chronicled the lives of the Louds in the early 1970s and catapulted the Santa Barbara family to notoriety while creating a new television genre: the reality TV series.

Educating movie about the genesis of reality shows... and my noting that nothing has changed much!

Not a very good movie, but interesting for those of us who lived through it.

An uneven but interesting film from HBO about the behind-the-scenes making of the first family reality TV show. The acting from all is strong, especially Tim Robbins, but the writing sometimes lets them down, with some stilted dialogue. I did like the film's use of archival footage, which was often more compelling, but felt its integration was inconsistent. What really made the film work, however, was the authentic dynamics between those involved, and the especially thought provoking end of the film, exploring the show's aftermath. 3/5 Stars

Just kind of wish that it got more in depth.

A fabulous film: the performances are note-perfect, especially Diane Lane, and the filmmaking is seamless. Somehow the early 70s setting doesn't end up being trivialized or camped up, and the birth of reality TV is seen a rather quaint, by today's standards. But still, it all works, and Tim Robbins and James Gandolfini -- both playing against type -- are superb, too. Definitely worth seeing.
