A sweet, if sometimes slow and overly "talky" romantic drama.

It's made on the smallest of budgets and features awkward if sincere performances, yet Yen Tan's film still manages to strike a series of plangent emotional truths about speaking one's heart and moving on.

Despite the lack of character development and the abundance of unnecessarily long scenes, the connection the two main characters develop in the midst of a recent tragedy is far more convincing and palpable than that of a lesser romance/drama film. Ciao is one of the more respectable and honest films portraying gay characters as real human beings rather than the stereotypes as strengthened by most other LGBT-oriented films.
