Christmas on Mars (2008)

The film tells the story of the experiences of Major Syrtis during the first Christmas on a newly-colonized Mars. Coyne has described the film as "Maybe Eraserhead or Dead Man crossed with some kind of fantasy and space aspects, like The Wizard of Oz and maybe A Space Odyssey, and set at Christmas-time. The story that unfolds is intended to hint at childlike magic within a tragic and realistic situation.

I wish I could open my review the same way the movie opened - the most intense, jaw-dropping visual hallucinogenic sequence I've ever experienced - THANK YOU Uptown Theater for CRANKING the volume that night as well. After that, well there's not a lot that can be said that would make very much sense without a few hits of LSD. Basically, Christmas on Mars is a complete cult smash. It is a movie that moves at a NON-HUMAN pace, sending out the message "DRUGS ARE BAD" in it's own special way, in a film that is undeniably made to be viewed on drugs. SO SILLY! Can't wait for a second chance to see this in a theater! I don't recommend it to anyone except fans of Flaming Lips and drugs!

Wayne Coyne, the front man and leader of the alternative rock group The Flaming Lips, directs and stars (along with his fellow bandmates and other friends) in this experimental, sci-fi/fantasy, 50s Sc-Fi Homage, semi-Christmas tale. On Christmas Eve on a base on Mars, many of the Crew are starting to lose their grasp on reality...as equipment is failing and the first baby on Mars is on the verge of being born...its a stressful time when the Alien Super Being arrives to help things just a little. It is an interesting movie, sometimes it is better than other times...but if you are a fan of the band or experimental stuff like David Lynch, you may find something charming about this DIY movie made over the course of 8 years.

Ayer fue el mi tercer intento por terminarla y lleguà (C) casi a la media hora. Juro que si vienen con Lolapalooza me la memorizo. Ideal para: Inception no es la realización de sus sueños.

I'll give it points for originality and the flick has a great visual style. But I will also say the script and the acting was not exactly fantastic. Without a doubt the weirdest Christmas movie ever. What else do you expect from The Flaming Lips?

Gotta see it. Low budget with big stars and a heaping helping of acid-trippy goodness. Wayne Coyne is very believable as an alien (no stretch there). Oh yeah, the alien monsters are very NSFW, not for sensitive audiences.
