'Chicken with Plums' sneaks up on you; you're so busy marveling at the exuberant style that you may not notice how swoony and enchanting this charming little movie has become.

The follow up too Satrapi's outstanding, Oscar-nominated animated film, Persepolis, could never live up to its predecessor, but it's still a decent film in its own right. Certainly as French as a French film gets. There are some wonderful sequences describing both the past and future of the main character's family. However, the main character himself is completely unlikable. Screaming at your caring wife that you never loved her on your dying bed? Distasteful, to say the least. Hopefully Satrapi's next isn't so acidic.

From the directors of Persepolis, Chicken with Plums is one of the year's funniest and most heartfelt, beautiful, sad, and touching films. It is also one of the best overall films that I have seen this year. The performances are excellent, the script is witty, and the cinematography is stunning. If this film is playing by you, you must go see it. It is something special.

Satrapi and Paronnaud have developed a signature style - bittersweet in tone and episodic in function, beginning and ending some scenes as though they were ellipses with a slow fade in or out to black.

Suffused with longing and whimsy, Chicken with Plum's tone can get a little stretched; it can be a touch twee, even cautious. But mostly this adaptation retains a sad dreaminess and a melancholy comic-ness without ever getting cartoonish.
