Chef (2017)

Roshan Kalra is a three-star Michelin chef who gets fired from New York's Gulli restaurant after he punches a customer. Forced to take a break, he flies to Kochi to spend time with his son, Armaan and his estranged wife Radha Menon. It's a fruitful trip because he manages to mend broken family ties. In a bid to help him get his mojo back, his wife suggests he put up his own food truck and begin afresh.

I had seen Jon Favreau's Chef and knew this to be the Bollywood rip over, well got to say they are two very different movies. While the plot premises is the same the storytelling differs, the Indian take is slow and all about father-son bonding, it does have few laughs but comes no were close to the fast-paced Hollywood version which besides covering the family angle is also a food adventure. For a movie titled Chef, it hardly covers the subject !!! Maybe if I had not seen the original I might have liked this more.

Chef offers moments of brilliance which, if weaved in a more organised manner, may have given us a light, affable film. But a lazy and rather uninterested narrative takes away the pleasure.

The dynamics of modern-day, urban associations are well-observed. It's the uneven, jagged and lazy tone of the film that lets it down badly.

Not as good as the original, but worth watch and a good performance by Saif Ali Khan

I felt that Saif was not convincing as a Chef - all he is shown cooking in the movie is pasta. There are several awkward moments of silence in the film and with dialogues like "aur kya" (what else), it feels like the dialogue writer has run out of words.
