Like Coltrane's music, the sheer brilliance of his musicianship cuts through the clutter.

Mark Feeney 03 May 2017

The documentary variously consists of archival performance footage, home movies, photographs, pointlessly flashy graphics, and many, many talking heads.

Ben Kenigsberg 12 Apr 2017

While the recordings are wall-to-wall, this somewhat busy documentary rarely accords time for simply listening.

Ken Eisner 23 May 2017

The 100-minute film is aimed at people who already understand John Coltrane's importance -- and therefore will be sorry it doesn't go deeper -- without providing much context for beginners.

Glenn Kenny 13 Apr 2017

Chasing Trane streamlines the story of the jazz saxophonist, but it does so in a way that doesn’t feel like cheating. Scheinfeld’s approach is to give the viewer the forest, point out a few trees and get out, confident that those trees will inspire the viewer to spend more time in the forest.
