Charlie's Angels (2019)

Elena Houghlin is a scientist, engineer and inventor of Calisto -- a sustainable energy source that will revolutionize the way people use power. It will be ready as soon as she works out the last issue, if not it could be turned into a dangerous weapon. But when the cutting edge technology is pushed to an investor before she can do that, Elena turns to the Townsend Agency for help. Now, it's up to the Angels -- Jane, Sabina, and the newly recruited Elena -- to retrieve Calisto before it can be transformed into a weapon of mass destruction.

There’s no big action set piece à la “Mission: Impossible” here and no single line of memorable dialogue to reference. But someone will have created a supercut of Kristen Stewart’s best moments on whatever app replaces YouTube, and that will remain more indelible than the movie as an actual movie, especially for the girls who see themselves or women they want to see on screen.

Elizabeth Banks blaming the male audience and a lack of awareness due to poor marketing for this movie flopping is disingenuous. If Banks has four credits on the movie including for script and directing then she has to shoulder a lot of the responsibility instead of deflecting on others. So - the freshest thing about the movie is Kristen Stewart’s performance. Jonathan Tucker impresses as a baddie and Luis Gerardo Mendez is amusing as health guru the Saint. But the script is a mixed bag. After a bright opening it just falls in a hole for 15 minutes of laborious set-up. Banks is surprisingly dull as Bosley - maybe her mind was on the directing instead of acting. Some of the action scenes are good but lack originality. We’ve seen it all before. The “girl power” message is heavy-handed. It’s not an atrocious movie by any means. A decent time-waster but nothing special.

Banks brings Charlie’s Angels into the modern age with flair, all while unapologetically raising a feminist flag, championing female friendships and subtly making a point about the urgency of the ongoing climate crisis.

I don’t know why so many people disliked this movie. I thought it was really fun to watch. I’m partial to any movie where women kick ass though. Loved the chemistry of the characters and the new imaging of the angels as a global organization. I especially loved Kristin Stewart‘a character. It was so nice to see her in a role that wasn’t so angsty (is that a word?). Loved the soundtrack too.
