Cartel Land (2015)

In the Mexican state of Michoacán, Dr. Jose Mireles, a small-town physician known as "El Doctor," shepherds a citizen uprising against the Knights Templar, the violent drug cartel that has wreaked havoc on the region for years. Meanwhile, in Arizona's Altar Valley—a narrow, 52-mile-long desert corridor known as Cocaine Alley—Tim "Nailer" Foley, an American veteran, heads a small paramilitary group called Arizona Border Recon, whose goal is to halt Mexico's drug wars from seeping across our border.

Just brilliant. A real life hero captured on film.

Thrillingly powerful - and terrifyingly persuasive with morality still being questioned - as Heineman riskily, with astonishing commitment, ventures out to uncover the hidden truth with overwhelmingly disturbing, visually raw results that are mostly sickening and actively injustice. Besides providing an ideological message, this is an addressing call for help that is being ignored by the cowardly, corrupt governments with supposed ignorance; and this very documentary over-achieves its genre's accessible role for the hard truth into the hidden reality. Along the Mexican border and further into Mexico there is a whole different world. The world of the cartels, the innocent people, the vigilantes and the militias trying to keep drugs out of America. This is a powerful and shocking story about 2 men. One on the American side patrolling the border and the other man who tries to take back the towns that the cartel has claimed. Dr. Jose Mireles is an ordinary citizen who decided to fight back against these criminal organizations and bring peace to mexico. On the US side is Tim Foley who lives in Arizona and fights to keep the drugs out. The movement that Dr. Mireles started was once a polarizing force in uniting the people in the small towns, now though as the government intervenes it becomes a cartel in it's own. This is a horrifying look at the cycle of power and violence in Mexico. Without the government to help the people, the communities continue to be in the crossfire. The lines between the criminals and the honest people begin to blur as power is shown to corrupt even those who consider themselves the good.

The run-and-gun style and Heineman's jaw-dropping access will keep your heart pounding through this examination of the current War on Drugs.
