Carrington (1995)

Painter Dora Carrington develops an intimate but extremely complex bond with writer Lytton Strachey. Though Lytton is a homosexual, he is enchanted by the mysterious Dora and they begin a lifelong friendship that has strangely romantic undertones. Eventually, Lytton and Dora decide to live together, despite the fact that the latter has fallen in love with military man Ralph Partridge, whom she plans to marry.

One of the problems of biopics is that, unless they are about witty or warlike people, they aren't very cinematic. In Carrington, there's little to find of interest in the dull titular character as she bonks a collection of chinless twats and penniless aristos while on the other side of the Channel millions are dying to protect their spoiled way of life. Wearying and annoying in equal measure, Carrington does little to illuminate the life of the artist while creating audience hatred of aristocracy and lovey thespians alike. I do hope these toffs were blown away by a deserter or something because I never made it to the end to find out. Of interest only to American art students and tweed afficionados (one star for the wardrobe).

Very well-acted British period piece/biographical drama. It's like watching a dance. The characters look at each other, move toward each other, dance together, step on toes and move apart, come back together. And as long as you're mesmerized by the elegant sets and orchestral background, you notice the passage of time more than a lack of development or real knowledge of the characters' inner workings, which perhaps is all we can hope for in a movie that seeks to portray historical (and privately public) figures. Each scene is itself a painting based on a bit of knowledge about a person at a moment of their life.

One of the most awful movies I've seen in a long time - not the acting (which was superb), but the thematic material - truth is stranger than fiction as the story of Dora Carrington shows. At the begging the characters are fixated with Dora's virginity which she subsequently loses due to the influence of a homosexual man whom she is in love with...but she loses it (and continues to "lose" it) with other men who love other men and other women...all rather too decadent for my virgin eyes...sigh...what a waste of good talent and time...
