The 1954 film version of Oscar Hammerstein's all-black Broadway musical now feels like a relic from the gruesome social straitjacket that was segregation; every frame, you feel, is freighted with the tension imposed by the never-appearing white folks. It was, however, laudable in its desire to showcase the talents of African-American performers who were denied opportunities in Hollywood.

Dandridge is hot; underrated musical adaptation. I'd like to see them do this with more operas - although keep the score at difficult notes.

a great modern version of bizet's carmen.dorothy dandrige is brilliant as the seductive femme fatal carmen.this film is very important in film history and people who love old movies should see this

Ah back to back reviews of Preminger films. This was the first version of Carmen that I saw on the big screen and after seeing the recent South African effort, this one just doesn't hold water. Now..all I have to do is see a stage version for another perspective.
