Its shamelessly sophomoric sense of humor only sporadically leans into inspired territory, but while it may not arrive as an instant classic, the ambitiously titled Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie easily stands among the best animated films of the year so far.

One day, Captain’s pint-size viewers will undoubtedly move on to Marvel’s spandex universe; until then, they’ve got this sweet, silly starter kit.

This movie is actually surprisingly decent. It has a lot of funny jokes, many of which work with both kids and adults. The characters are all enjoyable, if not very deep, and the plot moves along fast and the movie never lets up. And despite the movie being made on a lower budget (they even make jokes to that effect) but it was hilarious and the animation was still very good. Make no mistake, this is still a kids movie and some of the humor isn't going to land with the adults, but the movie has enough charm and jokes to keep it going. I will say that the main villain is kind of stupid and his jokes wear out fast, and some of the side characters are a bit boring though. But overall, not bad, very good for the whole family.

Even weirder than The Boss baby. Ive never heard of the books before.

I was a fan of the books when I was younger, so even though I'm in my mid-20s now I was somewhat looking forward to this. But it ended up being a boring, lazily animated romp (it only cost $38 million compared to the average animated cost of around $125 million), and even the big name voice cast seems to be phoning it in. Kids in my audience didn't even seem to loving it that much, which makes sense seeing as this movie is 15 years overdue...
