Camera Buff (1979)

Filip buys an 8mm movie camera when his first child is born. Because it's the first camera in town, he's named official photographer by the local Party boss. His horizons widen when he is sent to regional film festivals with his first works but his focus on movie making also leads to domestic strife and philosophical dilemmas.

Refreshing in its simplicity, CAMERA BUFF is not as visually pretentious as some of Kieslowski's later films, yet the precisely structured film is layered with insight into the sacrifices and responsibilities of a filmmaker, citizen, human.

Like most of Kieslowski's films, this is pretty much a yakathon about one topic, and pretty ,uch doesnt let up until the last minute. In this case, a laborer gets to make film about the company's annual get together, soon, this film gets noticed by film festivals and what not, and he's invited to make more films.. but his family life suffers, and soon the films also carry a political cost. A little too blah for it's own good I'm afraid.

It addresses many topics to great effect. Censorship, the moral and ethical responsibility of the film-maker, particularly of the documentary film-maker, passion for cinema and the change that can bring about. Not Kieslowski's best work, but fantastic all the same.
