Otto; or, Up with Dead People (2008)

A young zombie named Otto appears on a remote highway. He has no idea where he came from or where he is going. After hitching a ride to Berlin and nesting in an abandoned amusement park, he begins to explore the city. Soon he is discovered by underground filmmaker Medea Yarn, who begins to make a documentary about him with the support of her girlfriend, Hella Bent, and her brother Adolf, who operates the camera. Meanwhile, Medea is still trying to finish Up with Dead People, the epic political-porno-zombie movie that she has been working on for years. She convinces its star, Fritz Fritze, to allow the vulnerable Otto to stay in his guest bedroom. When Otto discovers that he has a wallet that contains information about his past, before he was dead, he begins to remember details about his ex-boyfriend, Rudolf. He arranges to meet him at the schoolyard where they met, with devastating results.

More than anything else, I think this film spoofs pretentious film directors who only like to make artsy-fartsy documentaries where they deal with more or less deep subject matters (being a zombie) through what they consider to be really thought-provoking means (gay porn). Don't despair during the first half an hour, the film becomes much clearer towards the end.

Bruce La Bruce's latest offering is a deadly affair of heavily politicized metaphors that overflows with imagination, angst and a smattering of good old fashioned porn.

gay zombies? yeah! the orgy of the undead? hell yeah! much better than i expected, pretty trashy, of course, and some appalling actors, but the story goes from funny to funnier. some very good moments and ideas, specially the silent movie girlfriend, providing her immoral suppport. the soundtrack is quite good, too (even though i don't like anthony and the johnsons, but the song worked well). and the sex? well, you just have to see it! apparently bruce labruce always makes two versions of his films... i wonder how the longer one would be like...

Otto; Or, Up with Dead People is a gay zombie love story from Bruce LaBruce. I like LaBruce's work and this film was very "out there" in terms of how the story was told, the visuals, and the music. Ultimately the viewer is asked to interpret Otto's psyche as he struggles to find his place in the world. It's a good film. Not for prudes as there is a fair amount of nudity and a sex scene involving a penis and a stomach wound. All in all, enjoyable.
