Cairo Station (1958)

Qinawi, a physically challenged peddler who makes his living selling newspapers in the central Cairo train station, is obsessed with Hanuma, an attractive young woman who sells drinks. While she jokes with him about a possible relationship, she is actually in love with Abu Siri, a strong and respected porter at the station who is struggling to unionize his fellow workers to combat their boss' exploitative and abusive treatment.

WEB. Comienza algo torpe, pero luego se asienta en su historia y logra crear un balance casi perfecto entre sus múltiples personajes y sus variados (y alternados) tonos. / Begins rather clumsily but later settles well in its story and manages to create an almost perfect balance between its multiple characters and its various (and alternated) tones.

Above all, Bab el Hadid is intelligent. The movie grabs Felliniesque characters (especially that sexy femme) and combines them in a joyous and iconic central location: the tran station of Cairo. But what seems to be a collective character study with intertwined layers of comedy and drama suddenly breaks all expectations (even those of the most experience movie-watchers) transforming the atmosphere into something entirely different, and in the end, the central idea and concepts remain the same! Talk about being genius and talented, Chahine! 99/100

Although definitely overly short in runtime and filled with too many characters, Cairo Station is nonetheless a very admirable film which is gorgeously shot, beautifully scored and all around a wonderfully old-fashioned, cinematic movie. The acting is good across the board, the main character is such a tragic figure easy to empathize with and the film deftly shifts genres from a romance to a social drama to a crime flick so well.
