After seeing Shinya Tsukamoto's "Vital" I had to get a-hold of another one of his films. In "Bullet Ballet", a man named Goda (played by Tsukamoto himself) is hit hard with the news of his girlfriend's (of ten years) suicide at the beginning of the film. What follows is a downward spiral of obsession, violence, and depression. At first, Goda becomes entwined with finding a replica of the gun his girlfriend used to shoot herself. This leads Goda into the underground world of gangs and violence in Tokyo's urban landscape. While watching the film I was struck with many different emotions and by the end I felt I was in a dream - and that's just what this film is like: a violent dream. It is a nihlistic view of misguided youth and a disgruntled older generation that come together, and in the end are still unable to find understanding. 9.5/10

"In your dreams you can kill anyone and get away with it. Tokyo is one big dream. A dream." The above quote hones in on the central themes and tone of this violent Japanese crime noir nightmare. The cinematography is the contrasty and visceral b&w of Pi meets WKW's handheld dreamy aesthetic of Fallen Angels or Chungking Express. Matched with Tsukamoto's signature industrial intensity (communicated effectively through sound design and soundtrack), it's a fairly evocative experiment (much more pleasant to watch than Tsukamoto's unbearable Tetsuo).

Bullet Ballet is one of the few films, to grab you by the balls flail you around beating you senseless into nearby houses and moving traffic for two hours and then you would thank it for it. There is something beautiful about this Bloodthirsty masochistic flick. The Black and white photography is excellent the fast paced story with a crazed industrial nonsensical soundtrack linger you on the verge of your own sanity. I have said this a million times now, I dig Tsukamoto in a completely hetero way but given the right opportunity I am afraid of what might happen.....

Tsukamoto (Tetsuo) is back with another hyperkinetic and colorless experimental film. It was incredibly difficult to get a gun in Japan before 3D printers!

Apart from being very stylish, as per usual, this tsukamoto film didn't really do it for me. It wasn't bad, but it definately doesn't rank amongst his best.
