A small boy squashing an insect sets in motion a series of events, large and small, that include a lost restaurant reservation, a drunken fender-bender, disruption of basic cable television service, and more than one relationship falling apart. One person's disaster becomes another's boon, and vice versa--because a man loses his job, a young girl becomes the lead ballerina in the school play, which in turn causes the death of a pet pig. These characters weave around Los Angeles and each other as seemingly mundane events fall into place, putting them on a collision course with a common fate and one heroic act of competence.

William Friedkin once more chooses a rather 'unusual' topic for a film.... but how well it works! Based on a stage show, with one of the original cast Michael Shannon (Peter) and boy has he nailed the character down! The set is claustrophobic, the lead characters paranoia develops from a feature of Peter's character right through to the demise of his befriended love. A chilling vision that the viewer will either love or hate due to not understanding the powerful undertones of this fantastic film.

I loved the Ansel Adams style opening pan-in shot. This is one of the minority of plays that easily translates to film. As with most surrealism, I love it because I enjoy the surrealistic element of not being sure where reality ends andl fantasy (in this case, delusion) begins.

literally the best movie i have ever seen. to be fair, i only saw the last 10 mins of the movie but HOLY FUCKING SHIT was it the best 10 mins of my life!! when i stumbled across this movie i witnessed the greatest, most warped, intriguing, intense, well acted, mystifying, horrifying, spaced out, edge of your seat, demented shit i have ever seen in a movie. to this day, i have NO CLUE what was going on. all i know is that some bloody dude and ashley judd were squeezing the shit out of each other and blubbering about bugs and paranoia, holed up in a room covered in tin foil, a corpse laying on the ground, and helicopters outside trying to fly into the room
