Bridge of Spies (2015)

During the Cold War, the Soviet Union captures U.S. pilot Francis Gary Powers after shooting down his U-2 spy plane. Sentenced to 10 years in prison, Powers' only hope is New York lawyer James Donovan, recruited by a CIA operative to negotiate his release. Donovan boards a plane to Berlin, hoping to win the young man's freedom through a prisoner exchange. If all goes well, the Russians would get Rudolf Abel, the convicted spy who Donovan defended in court.

Bridge of Spies gives a different and refreshing type of story from this era with the lovable Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance who perfectly show their characters through their subtle and real performances. Spielberg crafts the film perfectly with great visuals as he steers you often away from the typical action and sets up the world and situations through his various camera cuts or the way he directs our leads that make for a great story of morals and determination.

I'm a huge Spielberg fan and I love most of his films, so it was inevitable that I was going to love "Bridge of Spies." I just didn't know how much I was going to love it. This movie is absolutely fantastic. While it doesn't give anything new and groundbreaking to the cinematic experience, it's still a masterpiece in style, direction and acting. The structure and plot is really good and you can always follow the story of the film. Spielberg shows off his intense skills once again when it comes down to capturing the moment. Tom Hanks is amazing, as always, but the one who really impressed me was Mark Rylance as Rudolf Abel. He was extraordinary in this movie. This was one of his first acting jobs in America and he nailed it. A completely Oscar-worthy performance!
