I feel like I should have something intelligent to say about this film. But I can't say anything about how influential or revolutionary this film was; I wasn't around when it first made (new) waves. I can't say anything about the intent or the history behind; this was an impulse rent, since I have never seen a Godard film before. What I can say though, is this is one of the most aptly-named films of all time. Without any sense of history, the film is brisk and vibrant enough to overtake any possible pretensions one might attach to an old French film. Watching this was just plain ... fun. Joyful... other nice words. I want to watch it again.

A lot has been thought and said about this film throughout the years. And probably much more will still be said many, many years to come, therefore I will not indulge myself here in too much detail. The film definitely stands out as a milestone in world cinema. Its experimental tone, bantering mood, constant coquetry of the viewer and finally giving the proof that French culture is quite capable at borrowing from across the ocean - everything falls into place miraculously here. In the end Godard proves that to make a deeply engaging film on several levels (it will appeal to the Sixties generation, as well as the X-generation and even later ones), the only rule that should count is that you are supposed to break all of the existing ones. It is sad this seems to be forgotten these days.

Fantastic movie! Biggest expression of the French Nouvelle Vague! The jump-cuts, the amazingly entertaining dialogue, the realistic characters, the whole concept are just some of the things that makes this movie one of the most influential of the decade. I can even see that Arthur Penn was inspired by this to make his masterpiece Bonnie and Clyde. Jean Seberg is just gorgeous and very likeable. Jean-Paul Belmondo is also very good. A must-see.

Quite possibly one of the greatest films I have ever seen. The thing about Godard is, that you always have to keep an active mind when watching his films. I was particularly intrigued by his use of jump-cuts. A beautiful yet tragic story, with some of the greatest character development and active cinematography i have ever seen.

it is quite difficult to define what is great about this film, but great it certainly is. Some of the acting is decidedly ropey and the narrative structure is occasionally incoherent (or is that challenging?) In spite of this this is a very attractive film. It lloks absolutely beautiful (even with the dodgy print which I saw). It is an amoral film with an almost perfect anti-hero. It si a very stylish film and unlike many of the period it appears to have dated very little. This is curious as fashion and a contemporary jazz soundtrack are essential elements of the movie, yet it feels more "up to date" than many current films. The influence of the film is clear and many of the directors in both France and the USA owe a great debt to Jean-Luc A must see for any real fan of the cinema. GFT 140709
