Terrible, often cringe-worthy film of Vonnegut's book that completely misses the point. Rudolph mistakes over-the-top goofiness for satire and replaces the book's brilliant, hard-hitting criticism of American culture with a too-literal story adaptation, bad mugging, and a quasi-happy ending. Finney is well cast as Kilgore Trout, though.

This movie was just awful. It ruined a fantastic book with a strange, wonderful story and turned it into schizophrenic piece of crap. I wasn't expecting the greatest because the story is complex and I just wanted to see what they would do with it. Don't even bother.

I think that there are a lot of people who are fans of the book and were just waiting to tear this movie down. Most of Vonnegut's books don't seem like the kind that could be translated to screen very well, but Rudolph did a pretty okay job on this. It's not great, but it's enjoyable. The casting was spot-on for every character, and though the ending differs from the book, it's insane to expect the movie to mirror the novel word-for-word, scene-for-scene. I was pleased with the film.
