Bread & Roses (1993)

Based upon the life of activist and trade unionist (and later MP) Sonja Davies. The film covers her life up to 1956, when, at age 33, she was elected to the Nelson Hospital Board. During this period she develops strong socialist beliefs, marries and divorces, at age 17 trains as a nurse, has a romance (and a child) with an American marine who is killed in WWII action. She battles tuberculosis and marries a former boyfriend when he returns from the war. She becomes part of a women's ill-fated campaign to save the Nelson railway line from closure and begins to be elected to political bodies.

If you want social commentary but absorbing entertainment, gritty realism but fictionalized whimsy, something for the head but something for the heart, too, Bread and Roses delivers.

I never tire of Ken Loach's films. This one I watched back-to-back with Norma Rae and there is some complexity and thoughfulness to the characters here that could only have come only from a director who had made films like those that Loach is famous for, and the understanding he has about Class, that an American director sadly would have handled with far less perception. I did not catch some of Loach's trademarks but it was interesting to see him take on issues in my own country. I found myself a bit dismayed by the ending but the tragic end for his heroes is on thinking it over typical for him... and probably what separates this from usual Hollywood. I recommend this (and all his films)highly.

Always learn from Loach's movies....It was not the best of his, though, (I love land and freedom.) it is worth.
