Devout but iron-willed Father Flanagan leads a community called Boys Town, a different sort of juvenile detention facility where, instead of being treated as underage criminals, the boys are shepherded into making themselves better people. But hard-nosed petty thief and pool shark Whitey Marsh, the impulsive and violent younger brother of an imprisoned murderer, might be too much for the good father's tough-love system.

Boys Town (1938) -- [8.0] -- Spencer Tracy won his second Academy Award for his portrayal of Father Flanagan, a man who firmly believed "there are no bad boys." In the movie and in real life, Flanagan built an educational refuge for homeless and delinquent boys to prove his theory, and the facility still operates today. Mickey Rooney plays the toughest of Flanagan's kids, a boy whose defiance and criminal connections almost cause Boys Town to be shut down. I love the film's climax, when Flanagan and all the older boys storm a bank robber's hideout in a last ditch effort to save the institution's good name. I know "Boys Town" is sentimental and maybe even a tad bit ingratiating, but I guess I have a soft spot for stories about children forced to take care of themselves. "Boys Town" is a genuine feel good movie about having faith in your fellow man and making the best of what you have. And as far as great heroes of the movies go, I'd put Flanagan right up there with Atticus Finch.

Spencer Tracy obtuvo el Oscar como mejor actor interpretando al Padre Flanagan y su "ciudad de muchachos", en esta melodramática y extremadamente dulce, pero efectiva cinta. Basada en hechos reales, cuenta la historia de un sacerdote católico irlandés que ofrece un lugar a cualquier joven abandonado bajo la premisa de que "ningún niño es malo". Mickey Rooney interpreta a Whitey, uno de esos jóvenes que es difícil de rehabilitar.

what an amzing classic. this is a fantastic movie that is funny cute and sad. its just terrific with some of the greatest performances i have ever seen in a movie. i dont realy know a lot of these old actors but mickey rooney i thought just stole the show. he is highly entertaning and spencer tracy just gives such a fine performance he does so good with it. i really liked this fantastic film and i pretty much never watch black and white films. just terrific. oh and bob watson is just one of the cutest things ever. he is just so terrific and one of the reasons i really liked this movie.

It really was amazing at how Spencer Tracy transformed himself into an icon in american history. Father Flannigan was a truly great person who really transformed troubled youth into good people. Mickey Rooney was awesome as a juvenile delinquent who was always getting into trouble and never respected authority. I'm surprised that he didn't recieve the oscar as well as Spencer Tracy. Also, I was dissapointed that, "There's no such thing as a bad boy." wasn't voted as one of the greatest quotes in history. That to me sums up the whole personality of Father Flannigan. Boys Town is definetely one of the most inspirational movies I've ever seen, and it is one of the greatest too.
