Boys Town (1938)

Devout but iron-willed Father Flanagan leads a community called Boys Town, a different sort of juvenile detention facility where, instead of being treated as underage criminals, the boys are shepherded into making themselves better people. But hard-nosed petty thief and pool shark Whitey Marsh, the impulsive and violent younger brother of an imprisoned murderer, might be too much for the good father's tough-love system.

Boys Town, staring Spacer Tracy in his second Oscar-winning role tells us the story about the catholic priest, Father Flanagan (Spencer Tracy) who has an idea of creating a society where young orphan boys is in charge of their own society. It all started with one building, but have involved into what can be called Boys Town. But one day the young and rebellious, Whitey Marsh (Mickey Rooney) is been enlisted by his criminal brother who don't want him to end up like him. But it might seem that Whitey isn't fit for boys town, or is he? This is a great family film, it's even tear dripping. A typical film for everybody. And it's also great that there's actually are a Boys Town and that there was a nice man named Father Flanagan, even though most of the plot is pure fiction. But I enjoyed it. Thumbs up.

Based on the true story of Father Flannigan, a catholic priest who faught for years against a flawed system to take boys off the streets. In a time when homeless youth was sent to reformitories, Flannigan had to fight both the courts and the public. Spencer Tracy gives a heartfelt performance as Father Flannigan. And a very young Mickey Rourke co-stars in this heroic tale of determination and truth.

*** (out of four) Spencer Tracy won his second straight Academy Award for his performance as Father Flanagan. He is wonderful and warm in the part and the movie is inspiring. I just wish Mickey Rooney was more appealing to me. Whitey (Rooney) is a troubled young man who is taken in at Father Flanagan's Boys Town, a place were troubled boys can live and form a community that will help them. Whitey proves to be a hard subject. Tracy is great...Rooney is too much.
