Boys Town (1938)

Devout but iron-willed Father Flanagan leads a community called Boys Town, a different sort of juvenile detention facility where, instead of being treated as underage criminals, the boys are shepherded into making themselves better people. But hard-nosed petty thief and pool shark Whitey Marsh, the impulsive and violent younger brother of an imprisoned murderer, might be too much for the good father's tough-love system.

Boys Town has a heart, means well and is well acted and has its moments, but this is still such an overrated movie that never distinguishes itself from other biopics of the era with a boring story, slow pacing and very annoying characters.

Based on the true story of Father Flannigan, a catholic priest who faught for years against a flawed system to take boys off the streets. In a time when homeless youth was sent to reformitories, Flannigan had to fight both the courts and the public. Spencer Tracy gives a heartfelt performance as Father Flannigan. And a very young Mickey Rourke co-stars in this heroic tale of determination and truth.
