Box of Moonlight (1996)

Al Fountain, a middle-aged electrical engineer, is on the verge of a mid-life crisis, when he decides to take his time coming home from a business trip, rents a car, and heads out looking for a lake he remembers from his childhood. But his wandering takes him into the life of Kid, a free-spirited young man who helps Al escape from the routine of everyday life and find freedom to enjoy himself.

John Turturro is terrific as utterly totally sweet and gentle. And Sam Rockwell is a force, wherever, whatever he does. He's my favorite actor I think. The man's an acting machine. He's a beast.

One of the best hidden gems. Explores the whole "meaning of life" question with both the ambivalence and seriousness that characterizes the two main charaters. The key to life is a box of moonlight (no I did not just give something away for those who haven't seen this film). Sam Rockwell is superb as Kid. John Turturro is brilliantly repressed as Al Fountain, from which nothing seems to flow.

Mesmerising! It is one of those movies I had never heard of but for some unknown reason could not stop watching it. Watch it if you have a chance.

Barely recognizable by anyone, yet a delight in every aspect to watch. John Turturro is awesome in this and I wish he would do more straight shooter roles like this one, he's a funny guy. After you see Sam Rockwell's place, you want to live there with him and just eat Oreo's with milk for breakfast.
