This picture's script is a classic example of the early 1970s' "the modern age is fucked" worldview, a worldview that may have been more rational in 1973 than it is today. (No offense to people who still feel that way.) Because of this, it dates somewhat, and it would be a lie to say this picture doesn't contain a certain number of cliches. But nevertheless, it's a masterfully made film, and the performances are exceptional. I highly recommend it.

Almost a perfect screenplay, save for some late indulgences (the name-game, though a great indicator of generational divide and decay, gets a bit redundant). Sure, Jack Lemmon's career is full of outstanding performances; his technical proficiency--his TIMING--is mind-boggling. But watch closely when he says, "I just want to feel love for something." It's one of those rare moments in cinema when an actor pulls aside the curtain and, for a precious span of seconds, gives you a glimpse of his soul. And the Oscar goes to...? Yep.

Jack Lemmon won the 1973 Best Actor Oscar in John Avildsen's Arthur Miller-like sentimental melodrama, in which he plays a bitter down-on-his-luck L.A. businessman who feels cheated by the American Dream.

In the phony moral quagmire of Save the Tiger Jack Lemmon tugs at our heart strings while never letting go of his purse strings ...

Unbeleivably dark film reminds me of Ulysses as it takes place during the course of one mundane yet unusual day, with plenty of the action inside our hero's head. Great atmosphere. Lemmon won the Oscar for it. One of those great 70's pictures from a director who went on to make much more commercial Hollywood fare.
