sure it's the same tired boxing cliches but polonsky's sharp dialogues and garfield's greatest performance made it well worth watching, for me at least. james wong howe wore skates and rolled around the ring shooting the fight scenes with a hand-held camera, creating a level of realism that influenced 'raging bull'

A great noir about prize fighting, social mobility, and corruption. John Garfield stars as a rising prize fighter trying to escape the slums, but ends up alienated and empty as he succumbs to the temptations of the world of organized crime in which his promoter circulates. A great boxing film and classic redemptive ending in the ring.

The mother of all boxing movies, and made by a brilliant left-winger to boot. What's not to love?

Boxing movies (especially in the 40s) seem to follow a set program. Guy living in poverty rises up to fame, getting mixed up with thugs, falls in love with the good woman, but plays around with the bad one, then comes to a crossroads when it comes to (of course) throwing a fight. That being said, this is still one of the greats. Very real characters, and Garfield (as he was in FORCE OF EVIL) is on top of his game. A true knockout, although, I also highly recommend THE SET-UP.
