this is a fun movie -- the acting is great, based on a true story and is true to many who, like the main character, found college to be a very different world from from mom & dad's reality -- its not edgy, or dark, or heavy and it won't make you feel like a psychopath -- don't see this one to send a message to Hollywood, see this with a group of friends and have a good fun time.

The potential for an interesting story is high. Unfortunately, Miller's autobiographical tale, as told in Blue Like Jazz, squanders this potential by failing to take place in a recognizably real world.

Just saw an early viewing of the rough cut at the ELCA Youth Ministry Network Gathering in New Orleans. Yes, the audience full of liberal Lutheran were all fan boys of the book -- preachi9ng to the choir. I went in with an open mind. The acting and script were well developed. I found the characters believable, if not familiar. I can see thousands of youth workers will buy an copy and show it yearly to their high school groups.

I saw this film at an advance screening a few weeks ago, and was pleasantly surprised! The craftsmanship of the movie was excellent, plus I was moved by the story and accompanying characters. Whether you are a person of faith, or not, the questions the main character Don struggles with in the movie are ones that will resonate with many people - forgiving those who have hurt you, running from your past, questioning who you are, and who God may or may not be. As someone who's in the film industry, I love the story of how Blue Like Jazz almost didn't make it, but was then rescued by a monumental Kickstarter campaign. The effort was worth it, as Blue Like Jazz is a well-crafted, inspiring film that poetically raises questions that are on the minds of many. To use words from the book, "Sometimes you have to watch somebody love something before you can love it yourself." I, for one, love this movie, and I encourage you to bring your friends to see it on opening weekend - April 13th!

It doesn't ignore that people do not all have the same opinions on God and it comes away with a very humble response that sounds more conversational than preachy.
