Blow Out (1981)

While recording sound effects for a slasher flick, Jack Terry stumbles upon a real-life horror: a car careening off a bridge and into a river. Jack jumps into the water and fishes out Sally from the car, but the other passenger is already dead — a governor intending to run for president. As Jack does some investigating of his tapes, and starts a perilous romance with Sally, he enters a tangled web of conspiracy that might leave him dead.

As one of Brian De Palma's best films, BLOW OUT is De Palma at his best with this original and suspenseful film that has a strong performance by John Travolta and uses elements from Hitchcock and Antonioni's BLOW UP.

De Palma's "most personal" and a fan favourite. Despite being significantly modernist. It is more "classical" than Blow Up, but less "serious" (on surface) than The Conversation. However, this time, De Palma's satire, morality and politics meet hand in hand. The one film (apart from his bit part in Carrie) to repent for his many travesties (you don't need a list). Not to mention...JOHN LITHGOW! (De Palma regular). Oh, and NYPD's Dennis Franz too (another regular). If De Palma was respected more these terrific character actors may not have ended up resorting to mediocre television shows. Arguably Vilmos Zsigmond greatest photographic work for De Palma (The Black Dahlia is the contender, but let us not forget Obsession and to a lesser extent...Bonfire of the Vanities). Watch it!!! - and not just because it's one of Tarantino's favourites (word on the street is he stole some of the soundtrack for Death Proof, the SWINE!).

De Palma's can make a similar story with the same technique and it's still fantastic, Blow Out it's hell of a terrifying movie, De Palma's camera is you, you literally feel like you was involved every second of it, you feel it, you saw it, and you care about it, it's a masterful of a work with a marvelous performance by all the cast, Blow Out is another solid terrifying thriller by Brian De Palma.

Infused with elements of the JFK assassination, Coppola's "The Conversation", and Antonioni's "Blow Up", "Blow Out" is a magnificent feat in cinema. A masterpiece masquerading as a hidden gem.
