A disturbed man takes a vulnerable war widow hostage in her own house. I've never seen Robert Ryan do batshit crazy before, but he's very good at it. Unfortunately, Ida Lupino is mostly wasted, and has little to do except act scared (and kinda stupid). The film has some gripping moments, but also gets mired down in repetitiveness. It makes a very short movie feel longer than it should. And for the life of me, I can't figure out why this was set in 1918. If the opening title card hadn't announced it, I probably wouldn't have guessed (except for a couple of minor props). There's nothing about the story that wouldn't make sense in 1952. But like I said, it does have some moments. I really liked the ending, especially that Xmas ornament shot. Trivial note: in the beginning of the film, you can clearly see the dead woman blink. It's the kind of gaffe I always look for, but never expected to actually see happen.

In a Film Noir mood the past few days, so I decided to dig into something else with Robert Ryan and UIda Lupino, and while I enjoyed it for the most part I was slightly put off by the fact that I felt as if we joined the story mid-stream and just got swept along with a soap opera's existing story instead of watching a stand-alone film. Worth a rental.

A psychopath takes a job as a handyman at the house of a lonely widow. Beware My Lovely is a taut suspenser tailor-made for the talents of Ida Lupino and Robert Ryan. Lupino plays a pretty widow who impulsively hires handyman Ryan to look after her house. She soon learns Ryan is a dangerous schizophrenic, but by the time she comes to this realization she is unable to escape her house. The tension mounts apace, leading to an unexpected but quite logical finale. Produced by Lupino's then-husband Collier Young, Beware My Lovely was released by RKO Radio.
