An unpleasant woman-in-peril crime thriller.

In a Film Noir mood the past few days, so I decided to dig into something else with Robert Ryan and UIda Lupino, and while I enjoyed it for the most part I was slightly put off by the fact that I felt as if we joined the story mid-stream and just got swept along with a soap opera's existing story instead of watching a stand-alone film. Worth a rental.

Not a classic, but a solid little thriller with a mentally unbalanced Robert Ryan terrorizing Ida Lupino. It's really Ryan's performance that elevates this familiar story above a typical B picture.

A psychopath takes a job as a handyman at the house of a lonely widow. Beware My Lovely is a taut suspenser tailor-made for the talents of Ida Lupino and Robert Ryan. Lupino plays a pretty widow who impulsively hires handyman Ryan to look after her house. She soon learns Ryan is a dangerous schizophrenic, but by the time she comes to this realization she is unable to escape her house. The tension mounts apace, leading to an unexpected but quite logical finale. Produced by Lupino's then-husband Collier Young, Beware My Lovely was released by RKO Radio.
