Before We Vanish (2017)

Narumi is on bad terms with her husband, Shinji, when, one day, Shinji goes missing. He comes back a couple of days later, but he seems like a totally different person, and he is now gentle and tender. He goes for a walk every day. Before We Vanish's beauty, its poignancy, comes from its relationship to Kiyoshi Kurosawa's other work.

It's too goofy for mere words. Worse, it clangs against Before We Vanish's ultimate goal, dramatically undercutting its framework as art concerned with the course of humanity's fate. The film suggests we're close to extinguishing our own race as is.

Opening with moments of shocking violence but quickly sliding into absurdist whimsy, this is a weird one even for Kiyoshi Kurosawa. But it has its moments.
