Narumi is on bad terms with her husband, Shinji, when, one day, Shinji goes missing. He comes back a couple of days later, but he seems like a totally different person, and he is now gentle and tender. He goes for a walk every day. As an experiment in blending the minute character observations of Kurosawa's dramas into a pure genre plot, Before We Vanish does succeed.

The movie starts strong with interesting characters being portrayed by talented actors, but ends with a whimper as it leans too heavily on a cliche and fails to really show the reasoning behind some of the characters choices, or the development and growth of others.

It's too goofy for mere words. Worse, it clangs against Before We Vanish's ultimate goal, dramatically undercutting its framework as art concerned with the course of humanity's fate. The film suggests we're close to extinguishing our own race as is.
