Reuniting with filmmaker Philippe Claudel (I've Loved You So Long), Kristin Scott Thomas delivers yet another brittle, understated performance as a woman who isn't always likeable but is hugely sympathetic.

The actors provide chemistry and power the film, in spite of its cold qualities. This is undoubtedly purposely complex and no doubt some will find more to the film than meets the eye but it requires patience and calm to do so. This French film is ultimately an incredible effort at emotional density and an interesting but also frustrating one to explore.

Before the Winter Chill is a rather odd film: excellent performances, a convincing milieu, and then a final twist that seems so improbable that all Claudel's careful work seems undone.
