Telling his tale direct-to-camera and in his own words, Lazenby makes for a hilarious and charismatic guide to an incredible story.

Even Lazenby detractors can’t help but be charmed by the man himself, who may not have been much of an actor, but turns out to be a bloody good storyteller, and an awfully salty one at that — revealing sexual conquests that would make even Bond blush.

Lazenby himself takes center stage to tell his story and explain his actions at last but the end result is a sometimes frustrating work that takes a potentially fascinating tale and renders it mostly inert thanks in large part to its questionable approach to the material.

Entertaining, enlightening, funny, sad. George Lazenby tells his own story from childhood until he walked away from Bond with wisdom and self-awareness, but also with a healthy dose of charm and wit. The dramatisations are great. Josh Lawson isn't really much like George physically, but he does fine, and his comic and dramatic chops both get a big workout. A lot of the supporting Australian and British characters are clearly played by Americans doing dodgy (and some OK) accents, but that somehow manages to be endearing rather than annoying here. It's purely The Laze's side of things, so it's not exactly impartial, but after it finished I felt like I'd gained real insight into who George is and why things went down the way they did. As an Aussie Bond fan (and a fan of the Aussie Bond), I love it.

The charming, skillful storyteller George Lazenby himself is the best reason to watch Becoming Bond. The reenactments, while often funny and involving, simply can't hold a candle to the man and his anecdotes.
