Beau Travail (1999)

Beyond letter grade or stars given, Beau Travail is simply a work of art, and the most aptly named film I've ever seen. "Good work." "Good work, man." "Sir, this is what we expect of you." All in this title. Beau Travail is freedom through oppression, art through work, and through cinematic ellipses, Denis strips down filmic narrative to the same regiment in which these men train. It's basically a work of art, not for everyone, distant but gorgeous.

Hard to sit through. Rather pretentious film. Explores theme of envy, but is presented way too slowly. Its an artsy film not for most, but some will love it.

Claire Denis consistently breaks the boundaries of conventional filmmaking without resorting to pretension. BEAU TRAVAIL may just be her masterpiece, though I have a true fondness for TROUBLE EVERY DAY.

it's a visual poem over the thinly disguised bones of billy budd but it can't really be described, only experienced. the remarkable denis lavant strikes again. nice work indeed
