Ballad of a Soldier (1959)

During World War II, earnest young Russian soldier Alyosha Skvortsov is rewarded with a short leave of absence for performing a heroic deed on the battlefield. Feeling homesick, he decides to visit his mother. Due to his kindhearted nature, however, Alyosha is repeatedly sidetracked by his efforts to help those he encounters, including a lovely girl named Shura. In his tour of a country devastated by war, he struggles to keep hope alive.

Being so young and enduring horror before even experiencing joy, makes the love and companionship between two lonely strangers a return to an innocence robbed of so many youths over the long and frequent wars in Western history.

A touching Soviet film that's light on propoganda and big on heart. Excellent photography (Alyosha reuniting with Shura at the railroad overpass is stunning), I sensed a heavy Eisenstein influence in the way the characters were often shot in profile, low angle, staggered perspective. The hero of the story is a little too perfect for my tastes, though.

Even now, I am not know in detail who are the actor and actress of this film. But that doesn't matter. I love it, it's amazing. No happy ending, but the smell of waiting so moving...

The leave of a young Russian soldier is sidetracked by his own kindness and humanity. A story of human decency set against a backdrop of destruction and devastation. Poignant and sad but still inspirational.
