In 1942, Henan Province was devastated by one of the most tragic famines in modern Chinese history, resulting in the deaths of at least three million men, women and children. Although the primary cause of the famine was a severe drought, it was exacerbated by locusts, windstorms, earthquakes, epidemic disease and the corruption of the ruling Kuomintang government.

This movie is rated 40% here simply because most critics lack the capability to appreciate the film's true value. How much a viewer can get out of this 'movie' is purely up to the viewer's personal knowledge about China. If a viewer have sufficient knowledge about China, this piece is a priceless treasure that worth watching over and over with new insights discovered each time. Unfortunately this means not even many of the 'Chinese people' living on this planet nowadays would appreciate this film, let along other non-Chinese people. It saddens me to see this 200% film gets rated 40% here, however knowing this film is a diamond, rather than a tomato, dampens the sad feeling.

This movie is excellent if you are wanting to learn more about the history of China (war and famine) .... for it displayed a real China, unpleasant, even sad, but real.....

In painting a large-scale tableaux of the Henan disaster, Feng Xiaogang has inevitably been forced to sacrifice the specificity and focus on individual characterization that are generally so important for allowing the viewer a point of entry into such an important piece of history.

In Back to 1942 the audience follows the protagonists on a flet for survival. The result is a failed attempt to escape the hardships brought about by natural disaster, war, corruption, cruelty, fear and the dimise of hope. By bombarding the audience with a chain of horrific events the audience's emotional responses becomes numb near the end of the movie. This brilliantly reflects how people who witness exceeding amounts of surreal atrocity in the context of war become numb emotionally and adopt an attitude of indifference. The movie is indeed not uplifting. It may be upsetting to fans of hollywood movies that there is no happy ending or soul/spiritual victory for the main characters, but what this movie portrays reflect reality more closely. The movie is not meant to be uplifting but rather to show what true hopelessness is like.

I concur with a lack of connectivity but I think a degree of realism doesn't have to be super emotional or filled with particularly overdramatic lovable people if such ideal persons never existed. More importantly it attempts to tell a real story
