Baadasssss! (2004)

Director Mario Van Peebles chronicles the complicated production of his father Melvin's classic 1971 film, "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song." Playing his father in the film, Van Peebles offers an unapologetic account of Melvin's brash and sometimes deceptive conduct on the set of the film, including questionable antics like writing bad checks, tricking a local fire department and allowing his son, Mario, to shoot racy sex scenes at the age of 11.

both as an atmospheric, often funny look at the wild world of independent moviemaking and as a surprisingly touching story of father/son bonding.

Sometimes people have something to say in their art that is more important than anything, and I mean anything that tries to get in their way...this movie is that story and it is entertaining, heartbreaking and very relatable..awsome movie.... I want to see sweet sweetback's now

Very good movie about the struggles of making an all black cast movie with a mixed race film crew backed partially by Bill Cosby. This film led to blaxploitation movies that were prevelant in the 70's. Not quite a documentary, but still was supposed to show some of the behind the scenes of what occurred.

I think anyone that enjoys watching and reviewing films has thought of producing, directing, and/or writing their own. But, most know the struggles and risk that would come with that endeavor and we sit on the sidelines. That is why I enjoyed American Movie and Baadassss so much. While American Movie showed how difficult it is to make a movie with little money and too much beer, Baadasssss upped the ante by adding a Hollywood system that wasn't ready for a pro-black film to be made. Try making a film when you not only have to fight the pocket book, but also fight the system. I found Baadassss is extremely motivational. Don't miss it.
